Peter Lim, NYC

My name is Peter Lim. I primarily work with paper, metal and electricity.
I am passionate about art and design as well as philosophy and working them congruently. I believe that it is imperative that we make moral and ethical decisions in our work, as we are the progenitor of our ideas that will have an everlasting impact on our world.
I received my Bachelor of Industrial Design and minored in philosophy from Pratt Institute in 2024.

Holy! Holy! Holy!

My piece is a floor lamp made of aluminum, stainless steel, and mulberry paper. The base is made out of a small block of aluminum with two through holes to allow the two stainless steel legs to connect with the wiring underneath the base.
The legs are supported by rubber grommets which also isolate them from the aluminum. This is necessary since the legs carry electricity to the LEDs and would short if it were to touch the aluminum.
The lights are connected in parallel. They only require 5 volts of electricity to power which makes them entirely safe to touch just as if you were to touch the two terminals of a battery.
There are three levels that are all identical to each other. The light is reflected off of the curved mulberry paper that is supported by the horizontal stainless steel wires. They are held by a small piece of gaffer tape.

Ge-Stell [Enframing]
My capstone project is a union between my industrial design major and philosophy minor, with guidance from my studio professor Kate Hixon.
Thesis Statement:
Ge-Stell is an exhibit of light that visually renders the essence of technology and its danger in inhibiting man’s coming to presence through poetry (poiēsis), recalling back to a brief time when art was considered a technology (technē) For it is in the poetical, within our dwelling upon this Earth, where we faithfully reveal the truth about ourselves.
